    Counter An Argument

This framework is a tool you can freely use to help craft a counter argument in rebuttal to someone’s point. To get started, first notice a series of questions (Framework) followed by color corresponding example answers (Examples). Study the correlation between the color coded questions & answers before using the same questions yourself next time you craft a counter argument. The ultimate goal is to see the commonalities in empathy used to communicate so that you can gradually rely on this tool less and less.

    Counter Argument

    Framework

Answer the following questions to use as an outline before constructing your counter argument.

What is something that you both believe that may not reconcile with their argument? (look for a premise to build on)
What is your shared objective here?
In what ways can you acknowledge their position also helps move to that objective?
How will this counter argument move you towards that objective?
What context can you give for why you believe what you believe?
Now what specifically do you disagree with?
What evidence can you cite (list them, don’t say them) if requested?
How can you ask them for feedback?

I think we both just want to make sure the kids are having a good time on our vacation. We need to find a destination place that is fun for us, but also kid friendly. Although Universal Studios is undoubtedly a great idea for a vacation, I want to suggest an alternative vacation idea that provides more entertainment for our kids, but is equally fun for us. I’ve been to both Disney and Universal Studios many times myself and can say from experience that Universal has more rides with a minimum height requirement. Because our children are young, they will meet fewer of the ride requirements at Universal compared to the rides at Disney. Since you and I don’t care for the type of rides that would require a minimum height, we will be equally happy with either option. So I think we should plan our vacation to Disney instead of Universal Studios. I know that Betty has taken her kids to both theme parks. I’m happy to give her a call and ask about their experience. What do you think?
